Pia Wurtzbach at 2022 NY Marathon

Pia Wurtzbach, Miss Universe 2015, ran confidently beautiful during the 2022 New York Marathon last November 6, 2022. Pageant aficionados came in droves to show support for the First and Only Miss Universe Titleholder ever to run and finish the New York Marathon! Two other Filipina beauty queens have finished the NY Marathon, Gem Padilla (Miss Universe Philippines 1990 )and Anthea Robles (Bb. Pilipinas-International 1988).

We first saw a glimpse of Pia on Mile 14 and she was running well. She was waving and blowing kisses to everyone who was cheering for her. Two runners who were behind her commented “She is indeed a Superstar! People have been cheering foe her ever since we started running!”

By the time Pia reached mile 17, we noticed she was hurting, but being the true queen that she is, she still managed to wave and give thanks to the adoring crowd. You would hear people screaming her name while breezing through Thunder Alley!

She finished the marathon in 6 hours and 29minutes and 32 seconds. We were waiting to interview her at the “Friends and Relatives” waiting area when the Marathon App informed us that she has left the area. We decided to head to the subway and go home… With more than 50,000 runners and probably more than double the crowd in the area, we bumped into Pia and Jeremy as they were leaving! We managed to congratulate her and do a quick interview. I informed her that she is the only Miss Universe winner to run and finish the New York Marathon, “Really? I did not know that. My body is aching all over, but I am very happy I finished the Marathon today! I have beeen dreaming of this for a long time. I am so happy for the love and support I received along the route while I was running. Thanks for keeping me motivated all though out the race”.

I did it! We did it! 🥹

The NYC Marathon wasn’t a race, it was an experience. A life lesson. Probably the best run of my life. I saw and felt so much. I AM SO HAPPY 🥹 and grateful, inspired, humbled, and emotional…lahat na!

This medal represents how important it is that we keep the promises we make to ourselves. To me, it was running because I wanted a new challenge, a new discipline — to be healthier & to step out of my comfort zone, to see how far I can go. I knew it would take time and dedication to achieve it but I wanted to stick to that promise no matter where life or work pulled me. Over the years, I got used to being at the service of others and most of my decisions revolved around work or pleasing others. This time, I stuck by running a marathon for me. This was my way of taking care of myself. And now, it has enriched my life so much because it has put me in a better place, so I feel recharged & energized to be of service to others.

Thank you to my family & friends who tracked me & cheered for me. Especially for patiently waiting long hours as I trained everyday. 😅 my love @jeremyjauncey & @sarahwurtzbach @anellecharity @carlalizardo_ @bianca.guidotti @loveyourself.ph @doctress_vinn @riabrines @bessiebesana

And of course my coach! He’s the best! Gabb @gabbrosario thank you for pushing me and preparing me for this day! ☺️ Sobrang patient niya sakin at sa progress ko 😂

I’m grateful for all the support and cheering on ground and online. I saw your signages, your messages, and posts — kahit sobra yung kaba ko and yung pagod 5 hours in, lumalakas loob ko. 🙏🏼

Please watch out for my reel that documents my journey from training to the finish line…and pwede ko na ring sabihin ngayon: Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach from the Philippines, proudly a NYC marathon finisher 💙🇵🇭 @nycmarathon
